ii. Organized crime: "Back in the 1910-1920 Black Hand of Detroit had probably protection guaranteed by 'la Sacra Corona Unita' in Calabria. They then had the 'pact of blood' and united with 'la Sacra Corona Unita' . All members who didn't make the pact of blood were killed by 'family' members. Cosimo Caruso took that pact. He then met the Lord and changed life. 'La Cupola' in Italy gave orders to kill Cosimo Caruso because he was trialed and found guilty of betrayal by all the godfathers responsible for him in the USA. They shot him at point blank range right in the chest, but he survived and soon recovered. After he recovered from those wounds he went to face his ex-'godfather', and told him he wasn't leaving the 'family' because of betrayal or fear, but because he had given his will and heart to Jesus and if they wanted to, they could kill right on the spot. The godfather referred to the 'cupola' in Calabrai, and the 'capo di tutti i capi" made a unique decision (I never heard of any mobster that would be left alone after leaving a mafia 'family') and gave orders from Italy to all 'family' members in the USA not to touch Cosimo Caruso, because of the courage he had demonstrated by facing the godfather with humbleness and not armed." Gurzi

Gurzi, Domenico (a.k.a. "Dominic")
(son of Fortunato Gurzi & Caterina Giovinazzo)
b: 1876, Rosarno, Reggio Calabria, Italy
d:  {?}
m: Jun. 18, 1927 to Carmela Bongiorno (b: 1909, d: 1991)
c: Fortunato ("Fred") (b: 1928, d: {?}), Michael (b: 1929, d: {?}), Katherine (b: 1930, d: {?}), Richard (b: 1934, d: {?}), William (b: 1947, d: {?})

        Notes:
        i. Domenico emigrated to the United States Jun. 01, 1921
ii. Last residence in Hemet, California, USA

Gurzi, Fortunato
(illegitimate son of Father {?} DaVinci & Maria Forunata {?})
b: b: 1876, Rosarno, Reggio Calabria, Italy
d: 1909, Buenos Aires, Argentina
m: 1895 to Caterina Giovinazzo (b: 1875, d: 1917)
c: Maria (b: 1896, d: 1950), Marianna (b: 1902, d: 1970), Domenico a.k.a. "Dominic" (b: 1905, d: ?)

        Notes:
            i. Fortunato Gurzi's mother, Maria Fortunata
{?}, was the wife of Domenico or Rafaele Gurzi (uncertain of his first name). She was seduced by Father DaVinci, the village priest of Rosarno, Reggio Calabria. Their illicit relationship produced two children: Domenico (b: 1873, d: 1944) and Fortunato (b: 1876, d: 1909). Father DaVinci was to leave the priesthood and marry Maria Fortunato Gurzi once her husband died (divorce was out of the question) but Father DaVinci died first. As for the two children Father DaVinci sired (Domenico and Fortunato) they bore the surname of         Gurzi.  Maria Fortunata's husband was believed to be unaware of her infidelity.
ii. "In 1888 an unfortunate incident forever changed the lives of [Domenico and Fortunato]. When ages 15 and 13 respectively, they and Domenico's friend, Rafaele were playing in the shoemaking shop where the brothers served as apprentices. They were using leather boring tools, called
awls, as darts. The boys became boisterous, and Domenico's awl pierced Rafaele's heart killing him instantly. The brothers were tried, and Domenico was convicted of murder. Fortunato was convicted as an accomplice. Both served seven years and were paroled in 1895.
iii. Fortunato escaped with his wife Caterina and daughter, Maria, to Argentina in 1897. "They escaped because, as parolees they
(i.e., Domenico and Fortunato) were made suspects for every disturbance or crime that occurred in Rosarno." Fortunato's brother, Domenico, fled with his family to Kitchner, Ontario, Canada in 1909. Domenico never returned to Italy but Fortunato returned once in 1901. "The following year (1902), Marianna was born. Dominic followed in 1905. But things had not changed in Fortunato's favor,  and in 1908 he returned alone to Argentina where, in 1909, he was killed in a bar in Buenos Aires from a gunshot wound by a man named Francesco Tagliaferro. Fortunato was 33 years old at the time of his death. Tagliaferro attempted to change his appearance by shaving his beard but he was arrested and convicted of first degree murder. Fortunato was buried in a local cemetary in Buenos Aires but, to the best of my knowledge, no one from his family has ever visited the grave site."

iv. "It seems that after giving her life to Jesus, [Maria Gurzi (Caruso)] fell ill and soon went into a coma in the USA. In this coma she dreamed of her reaching the Lord, and telling to the Lord that she was happy to go with Him for eternity, but that she had a weight on her heart for her family in Calabria. The Lord agreed to give her the time she was asking for, and immediately she woke up form the coma. Very soon, she was taking a trip back to Calabria (back when it would take a month) to talk to her family about the Lord. She started meetings She started meetings in brother Caruso's house, these meetings were secret at th time. That's when brother (Salvatore) Caruso (the nephew of Maria) gave his heart to the Lord. He was 19. Maria Gurzi (Caruso) went back in the USA and went heaven with the Lord a month later. Source: Maruo Campus Giraldo <marocampusgiraldo@gmail. com> as told to him by Salvatore Caruso.
